Tanjung Kepah Mangrove Action Project (TKMAP) aims at addressing the mangrove degradation at Kampung Tanjung Kepah through installation of a permeable wave screen (a type of hybrid engineering and NbS) constructed using bamboo poles in order to reinstate the natural sediments dynamic and soil condition.
The permeable wave screen is able to act as a wave breaker hence protecting the newly regenerated mangrove saplings at project area. This approach is one of the Nature based Solutions which applying natural processes and materials to meet society’s need for coastal protection and increase the success rate of mangrove enrichment planting effort. The suggested approach is climate adaptive and generally cheaper to construct and maintain as compared to hard infrastructure, e.g. rubble-mound breakwaters.
It is an aspiration of the project to encourage community involvement and participation in building the permeable wave screen and mussels’ reef that could both solve the issues of imbalance sediments dynamics that cause mangrove degradation in the first place.
A pilot project on building with nature that will help in the natural regeneration of mangroves and control coastal erosion.
Peat swamp forests are nature’s treasure trove. Despite their harsh living conditions, a wide variety of endemic plants and animals are to be found in these environments. Among the many fauna species found in peat swamp forests, the most vulnerable of it all is probably the peat fish. There have been very few fish surveys […]
The Waterbird Population Estimates (WPE) online database provides current and historic estimates, trends and 1% thresholds for over 800 waterbird species and 2300 biogeographic populations worldwide. This project has been developed by Wetlands International with the support of Environment Canada and the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands.
Restoration of coastal hydrology at Tanjung Piai, Malaysia
Wetlands International Project looked into the problems with erosion in Tanjung Piai which was designated as a Ramsar site in 2003. The coastal mangroves are an important landmark of Malaysia: the most southern tip of the Asian Continent.
