CSR MANGROVE REPLANTING
CARGILL MALAYSIA
by Wetlands International Malaysia

Date   : 8th June 2023, Thursday

Time   : 9:00 AM – 12:30 PM

Venue : Pusat Pendidikan Kecil Hutan Paya Laut, Nibong Tebal, Pulau Pinang

Wetlands International together with our partner Penang Inshore Fisherman Welfare Association (PIFWA) coordinated a mangrove replanting activity for Cargill Malaysia under their CSR programme.   Participants from Cargill Malaysia were first given a brief introduction from Mr. Ilias Shafie, President of (PIFWA) on the mangroves in Nibong Tebal, Pulau Pinang and their conservation works in protecting and maintaining the coastal ecosystem there.

He also gave a safety briefing on “Dos and Don’ts” during replanting activity at the site. Participants were required to wear the provided rubber boots and gloves.

The replanting site is located at the mangrove forest along the Sungai Chenaam, where the area plays a vital role as the habitat of diverse flora and fauna. The mangroves here also serve as the source of livelihood for the local communities around the area. A total of 500 mangrove seedlings; Bakau minyak (Rhizophora species) and Api-api (Avicennia species) were replanted. Besides this, the participants also helped to clean-up around the mangrove site.  They collected three bags full of trash!

By holding such activities we hope that corporate organisations and others will learn to appreciate the environment and especially the mangroves in this case and our their production activities can minimise impact on these unique ecosystems.
