Wetlands are important habitats for a diverse range of plant and animal species. From estuarine crocodiles, proboscis monkeys and mud skippers of mangrove forests to the orangutans and dragonflies of peat swamps or the many fish and bird species found in rivers and lakes, wetlands play an important role in their life cycle by serving as breeding grounds and nurseries.

Since 1970, global populations of freshwater mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds and fish species have declined drastically due to the degradation and loss of wetlands. Far too often, wetlands are being categorized as wastelands, meaning these treasure troves are often converted for agricultural or development purposes.

Malaysia has been identified as one of the megadiverse countries that harbour a rich biodiversity and have high numbers of endemic species. Conversion and the lack of studies and documentation conducted on wetlands means many more undiscovered species would be lost.

We strive to protect and restore iconic wetlands and species by raising awareness of their essential value and importance to society, and providing the knowledge base for informed management and conservation.
