25 October 2025 — The first stakeholder engagement program under the Building with Nature Sungai Haji Dorani (BwN SHD) Project was successfully held at Sungai Besar, Selangor. The half-day event was jointly organised by Wetlands International and Universiti Malaya, with support from Yayasan PETRONAS.
The program brought together key project partners including the National Water Research Institute of Malaysia (NAHRIM), Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM), Department of Fisheries Malaysia (DOF), and the JPKK Kampung Sungai Haji Dorani, along with local community members from Kampung Sungai Haji Dorani and Kampung Sungai Limau.
The main objective of the workshop was to raise awareness on the current coastal and mangrove conditions in Sungai Haji Dorani, while encouraging local participation and support for upcoming community-based activities under the BwN SHD project.
The session began with an Introduction to the Building with Nature project presented by Wetlands International, followed by a talk on Mangroves as Coastal Buffers by NAHRIM, featuring a live wave flume demonstration that showcased how mangrove stands can effectively reduce wave energy. Universiti Malaya then led an engaging session on Mangrove Ecosystem, followed by a group exercise (Latihan Dalam Kumpulan) where participants discussed key topics and presented their answers. Small prizes awarded to the best presentation.
The program concluded with a distribution of food baskets to the participants as a token of appreciation for their active participation. This engagement marks an important step in building local understanding and involvement, ensuring that the BwN Sungai Haji Dorani Project remains a collaborative effort towards strengthening coastal resilience and protecting mangrove ecosystems for future generations.
