January 2025

An eco-friendly structure built at the foreshore of Tanjung Kepah to help protect the coast from erosion and support the mangrove restoration. It is part of a nature-based approach to coastal protection.

How does it work?

  • A permeable structure made from local bamboo poles, tree branches, trunks, and RC piles (as supporting).
  • Wave energy is reduced as water flows through the structure.
  • Sediments are trapped, helping the coastline to grow stronger over time.
  • Promotes natural protection and supports nearby ecosystems.

Why is it important?

  • Eco-friendly and low carbon – uses natural materials.
  • Cost-effective and easy to maintain or replace.
  • Suitable for shallow and muddy coastal areas.
  • Supports ecosystem restoration and sustainable coastal management.

This project goes beyond infrastructure, it empowers the local community as well. A dedicated group of local community has been actively involved in the Monitoring and Maintenance (M&M) of the wave screen on a weekly basis. These community members were equipped through a series of hands-on workshops designed to build their capacity in observing structural integrity, recording sedimentation changes, and conducting minor repairs.

Through this participatory approach, the Bamboo Wave Screen serves not only as a physical barrier against erosion, but also as a platform for community stewardship and environmental resilience.
