Wetlands International organised and successfully carried out and completed two sessions under the Mangrove Ecosystem Awareness Program (MEAP).  The first session was conducted in partnership with SMK Taman Desa, Kuala Lumpur on September 5th, 2024, and the second session was in partnership with Kuala Lumpur Girl Guide (KLGG) and SK Brickfields (1) on September 18th, 2024.

The program aimed to provide an exposure to younger generation on mangroves ecosystem and promote deeper understanding and interest towards conservation efforts. A total of 170 students from both primary and secondary schools participated in the sessions.

Some of the activities for the program were:

Mangrove Talk is a knowledge sharing activity, giving a general background of mangrove’s characteristics, distribution, adaptation, importance, and threats.

Mangrove Trivia is an interactive quiz activity applying hybrid concept of Kahoot quiz game. A total of 20 questions were displayed from Kahoot website, and students raised the answer boards (red, blue, yellow, and green colours) to answer questions.

Mangrove Model Tank required students to apply their imagination and creativity to build their own mini mangrove ecosystem. Clear plastic container, miniatures of houses and trees, rockwool sponge and sand were provided.

Throughout the MEAP program, three main points were highlighted and they were to Reduce Pollution, Learn & Educate and Volunteer & Participate as a take home message, with the hope that the students would be able to understand how their simple actions can make a big difference.
