To protect and restore wetland areas of high biodiversity value in the lower Belait valley, Brunei Shell Petroleum and WI are working together to develop a Biodiversity Action Plan. In order to do this we first need to know what plants and animals are living in the area. Therefore we are carrying out biodiversity surveys focused on peat swamp and estuarine fishes, mammals, vegetation, reptiles and amphibians, birds, dragonflies and bats in the project area.

Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sendirian Berhad (BSP) and Wetlands International (WI) Malaysia introduced the Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) project area to stakeholders by leading a visit to the Kuala Balai peat swamp in the morning of January the 31st 2013.

Forest biodiversity – Towards a Green Economy

Wetlands International co-hosted an international conference to promote sustainable management of Brunei’s peat forests and mangrove forests on 22-23 March at Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam. The event was organised in cooperation with the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources of Brunei Darussalam through the Forestry Department and was organised in conjunction with this year’sWorld Forestry Day celebrations on 21 March 2012.

An increasing part of Malaysia’s palm oil is produced at the account of huge areas of tropical peatswamp forests. Especially in the Malaysian state of Sarawak, expansion of oil palm plantations may lead to the complete loss of these vast, unique forests by the end of this decade. This is shown by new figures from Wetlands International and Sarvision.

Kuala Lumpur - The Malaysian Palm Oil Board subsidises pseudo scientific research in a desperate effort to justify the destruction of around a million hectares of peatswamp rainforest areas for palm oil production.

Greenhouse gas emissions due to the loss of peatsoils have rapidly increased in Southeast Asia in the last twenty years and now have reached a magnitude equal to 70% of all fossil fuel carbon dioxide emissions. This conclusion follows from the first ever inventory of peatland carbon emissions per country, as presented by Wetlands International in cooperation with Greifswald University at this week’s UN Climate Summit in Barcelona.

 Thirty-seven  participants assembled in Miri, Sarawak, East Malaysia, for the AWC Waterbird Workshop, which was held from 27th Feb to 1 Mar 2009. The participants came from Kalimantan, Java, Sumatra and Sulawesi in Indonesia, Sabah and Sarawak in Malaysia, Brunei and Holland, ensuring a good mix of backgrounds and experience. The workshop was funded by a grant from the Keidanren Nature Conservation Fund.
